Consulate General National Day Celebration Honors Women.

Ms. Tatiana Gfoeller, Ambassador Mr. Ford Fraker, and His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Ahmed Al-Tayyeb participate in a cake-cutting ceremony at the American Consulate.

The Consulate General of the United States of America in Jeddah observed its 2008 American National Day on March 8 with a gala celebration attended by 200 guests.  The event coincided with International Women’s Day, presenting an opportunity to honor women who play a leading role in society and in the advancement of humanity. In his remarks, U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ford M. Fraker noted that, in a major milestone for women’s health in the Kingdom, the U.S.–Saudi Arabia Partnership to Combat Breast Cancer recently launched a breast cancer awareness training program called the Course for the Cure with personal support from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, Her Royal Highness Princess Hessa Bint Tarrad Al-Sha’lan, and First Lady of the United States Laura Bush. The U.S. Ambassador cited the importance of commercial and educational exchange between the two countries.  He praised the King Abdullah Scholarship program and noted that the U.S. currently hosts 15,000 Saudi students – a figure he hopes will double in the next three to five years. Ambassador Fraker added that he intends to encourage U.S. business activity in the Kingdom by sending positive signals to American companies that the security environment has improved. He stressed that both countries want to make it easier for each other’s citizens to visit for tourism, education and business, and expressed his hope that a proposed five-year reciprocal visa arrangement can be worked out.
